Smoothbeam (R) laser treatment offers new hope for acne sufferers
The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology just published research indicated that the Smoothbeam(R) laser offers a new long-term clearance option for those suffering from acne.
Acne is the main reason people seek dermatological care, and it is the most commonly diagnosed skin disorder.
Previous research has shown that the Smoothbeam laser works to slow down the production of the over-active sebaceous (oil-producing) glands which are the root cause of ongoing acne. This study focused on treating patients of different skin tones with the Smoothbeam laser three times over four week intervals.
The best results were a 75% reduction in the amount and type of acne lesions in all patients after the final treatment. Significant improvement was noted as early immediately after the first treatment. Acne scarring was also reduced by at least 25% in all patients. Some patients obtained a reduction in acne scarring as high as 50%.
The Smoothbeam laser works by sending heat to the sebaceous glands to diminish their rate of oil production. Side-effects are minimal, and the researchers suggest that this could be a very effective treatment alternative for those patients whose acne has not responded to other treatments. In addition to the almost immediate improvement in number of acne lesions, this treatment also produced overall improvements in skin texture and the quality of complexion.
Acne affects more than 78% of the population worldwide, and there is ongoing research into effective and lasting treatments. These results suggest that the Smoothbeam laser may be the newest, and most effective, doctor administered acne treatment.
Without the side effects associated with oral and topical antibiotics, Smoothbeam represents a valuable advance in acne care and treatment.
