Red Light Blue Light Acne Treatment

In 2000, the British Journal of Dermatology found that regular treatment sessions under specially designed red and blue light can significantly help clear acne, especially for those patients with moderate to mild acne.

When using red and blue lamps for 15 minutes a day, participants in this study were pleased with a 76% drop in visible pimples/lesions over a 12 week time period.

Why are red and blue light so effective?

Low intensity blue light (405nm-420nm) has been shown to kill the bacteria which causes acne. Two 15-minute exposures a week over a period of four weeks produced a decrease in acne between 60-80%. Patients remained acne free, or at least had less acne for periods between three-eight months after this four week treatment.

Red light is believed to have a healing, anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. Some information suggests that skin can help up to 200% faster when exposed to red light in certain doses.

The FDA agrees, as in 2002, they approved blue light therapy for treatment of acne. The first such blue light system was Clearlight. In this treatment system, patients are exposed to blue light source for 15 minutes at a time, two times per week, for four weeks. Treatment costs about $50-$150 per session, and total cost for a 4 week treatment cycle is between $400-$1200.

This type of light therapy for acne is considered a cosmetic procedure, and, as such, may not be covered by health insurance. (Though check with your health insurance to be sure).

Another, less expensive option, would be to purchase appropriate wavelength red and blue lights for your own personal use at home. Look for phototherapy supplies for acne. Be sure to do your research, and be sure that anything you select will actually work for you. The benefits of this approach would be less cost, and ongoing treatments in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

If you're troubled by acne, perhaps phototherapy for acne could be right for you.
