Isotretinoin, a synthetic Vitamin A product commonly prescribed for the treatment of acne has been implicated as a probable cause of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and may actually speed up the rate at which symptoms appear for those who are predisposed to IBD.
In a review of studies from 1997-2002, researchers found a strong link between isotretinoin treatment and development of IBD in more than 68% of the cases reviewed.
IBD symptoms were improved or resolved completely in about 25% of the patients who stopped taking isotretinoin.
The retinoid family of substances triggers various kinds of biological processes in the body, including T-cell stimulation, disturbances in epithelial cell growth, and other effects in the synthesis, or effects of biological compounds.
There is a link between IBD and acne, as both tend to begin in young adulthood.
While these findings don't mean that you should stop using isotretinoin, you should be aware of these possible side effects and contact your doctor immediately if you start to experience any kind of GI problems while taking this medication.

Roaccutane, a member of the retinoid family, has been around since the 1980's. It is a member of the class of Vitamin A related compounds used to treat severe acne.
Since the drug was first introduced, there have been controversial complaints of depression and suicidal behavior in some group of people using Roaccutane.
Roche, the drug's manufacturer, has since included a warning label in the product information that mentions use of Roaccutane may cause depression, psychosis (loss of touch with reality) and suicidal behavior.
A new study examined the effects of Roaccutane on a group of mice, and found that mice who were administered Roaccutane spent more time immobilized and unresponsive to stress, compared to non-treated controls.
While the results of this study can not be applied directly to humans, it does show that the retinoid family of compounds may have wider nervous system effects than previously believed. Roaccutane is not prescribed to pregnant women for this reason.
Studies on people have been influenced by the fact that severe acne may lead to severe depression on its own; regardless of treatment. However, if you are currently taking Roaccutane and are finding yourself feeling blue, weepy, or listless, talk to your doctor about other treatment alternatives for your severe acne.
